Home painting: the right order before choosing what to rent

Before choosing between a paint sprayer and a roller, the wall needs to be ready. That means sanding imperfections, filling cracks with filler or sealer, and protecting everything that will not be painted. Skipping this step causes the paint to peel within months and forces you to redo the whole job.

In Itajaí and Navegantes, most houses have plastered walls that have built up layers of flaking old paint. Setting aside two or three days for surface preparation before a week of painting saves materials and ensures a result that lasts.

Wall sander rental: preparing the surface before painting

A wall sander, also called a long-reach sander or giraffe sander, typically has a 225 mm disc and a motor between 600 W and 800 W. With the pole extended, it reaches up to 2.7 m without a ladder, which handles walls and ceilings at standard floor-to-ceiling height. For a three-room house, two days of wall sander rental is usually enough to sand everything.

For drywall, use 120-grit sandpaper. For plastered or textured surfaces with larger imperfections, start with 80-grit and finish with 120-grit. Check in the Alugoae listing which grit the owner includes, and arrange extra discs in the chat if you need more than one type.

Paint sprayer vs roller: daily output and when each one pays off

An electric low-pressure (LVLP) paint sprayer typically covers 8 to 12 m² per minute on smooth walls. A 23 cm roller covers around 30 to 40 m² per hour, depending on paint viscosity. For an exterior wall of 60 m², the sprayer finishes the application in under an hour; the roller would take the whole day.

Renting a paint sprayer makes more sense when the area is large and the surfaces are smooth. For small rooms with many corners, windows and baseboards, the roller ends up faster because it needs less masking. Paint used in a sprayer usually needs 10% to 20% dilution with water, depending on the brand; always follow the label instructions.

Ladder or scaffold: height determines the right equipment

For a single-storey facade with gutters, a 6 m extension ladder handles most high points. For a two-storey house or a facade above 4.5 m, a tubular scaffold two or three sections high is safer and lets you work with both hands free. In Balneário Camboriú, two-storey seafront houses usually need a scaffold to reach the area above the second-floor windows.

Before confirming the scaffold rental, discuss with the owner the number of planks and the maximum height the structure supports. Record everything in the Alugoae chat before the booking is accepted.

Masking, tarp and tape: what you must not leave out

A paint sprayer spreads a mist of paint up to 2 m away, especially in a breeze. Cover floors, windows, baseboards, plants and furniture with at least 200-micron plastic sheeting. Regular masking tape does not hold the paint edge cleanly; use blue tape, which peels off without lifting the previous coat.

If using the sprayer outdoors, let nearby neighbors know and work in the early morning hours when the wind is calmer.

Returning the sprayer clean: the step no one can skip

Most electric sprayers have a reservoir of 800 ml to 1 litre. Cleaning means emptying the reservoir, using the right agent (water for latex and acrylic paint; solvent for oil-based paint) and running the sprayer until it comes out completely clean. Do this on the day of return, with enough time before the agreed drop-off hour.

A nozzle clogged by dried paint is the most common damage and is usually deducted from the security deposit. Photograph the sprayer at pick-up and at return, and record it in the Alugoae chat. If you find a blockage when you pick up the item, tell the owner immediately through the chat to avoid problems at return.

Frequently asked questions

Is renting a paint sprayer worth it for a whole house?

Yes, for anyone with at least two days of painting and smooth walls. The speed gain in application offsets the extra time that masking furniture and surfaces requires.

Which wall sander should I rent for drywall or plaster?

A long-reach sander with a 225 mm disc works for both. For drywall use 120-grit; for plaster with larger imperfections, start at 80-grit and finish with 120-grit.

Do I need a scaffold or a ladder to paint the ceiling?

For a standard ceiling height of 2.7 m, the long-reach sander handles the preparation without climbing. To apply paint with a roller, a two-step ladder is enough. A scaffold is only needed for ceilings above 3.5 m.
